2021 Challenges

"Chinese Whispers" Challenge (13–14)

My daughter and I skyped all through lockdown and took part in a virtual geo caching event, each week we "visited" the most beautiful and often unfamiliar areas of countries world wide.

We use elephants symbolic- ally as a link to my daughter in law's Indian heritage.

November. I wanted to continue the theme of the strippy method and thought of the elephant silhouetted against the sunset. This time I experi- mented with entirely hand stitching the piece. I came to the conclusion that machine stitching is preferable for this method although I enjoyed the hand stitching.

December Mount Kilimanjaro — silk painting & appliqué.

I call this Granny meets her grand-daughter as in all this horrid covid my light and joy is that I'll be a granny for the first time.

I started with a photo which I liked and something that I thought I could work with .I enjoyed the thread painting and was more confident as I went on.

Each month I tried or attempted different techniques becoming more experi-mental .

I zoomed into the distant tree tops and let my imagination run riot in my fantasy forest .

If you're wondering how I cramed so much into an A4 size, well I didnt, no idea how this happened, its 2 inches to big both ways.

December. The tree caught my attention and the use of the confetti method was quickly decided upon. I struggled a bit with the strips and think I may have been more successful using blocks of colour rather than strips for the back-ground.

The back-ground was made using strips of fabric, the tree trunks appliqued and the leaves and branches were hand stitched. I practised making french knots for the blossom.
